Energy security has globally become one of the hottest political topics in the last few years with the prospects of skyrocketing oil prices and shortages. Along with the looming dangers of climate change, the urgency of alternatives to CO2 emitting energy sources is becoming more obvious by the day. One of the most important actions to counter these challenges is the establishment of alternative energy sources such as solar energy. Solar power Solar power has traditionally been differentiated into solar thermal and solar photovoltaic (or PV for short) systems. The photo-voltaic effect is a phenomenon that depends on quantum physics, and allows specific materials to directly convert solar radiation to electricity. The photo-voltaic effect is used in solar panels, which have been powering spacecraft for decades and have recently been making their presence felt in supplying electricity to free-standing locations on earth, like telephone towers and pump systems on farms. However, the panels available commercially today are almost all based on high-purity silicon as the photo-voltaic material, and these panels are much more expensive than the equivalent amount of coal, petrol or gas.....but: Solar Energy is a long term solution and will pay off in the long run. Here is a simple mathematical example Solar vs. Generator Are you running a generator currently for lets say about 5-6 hrs daily, then please pay attention to the following to save yourself some money. 6 hours generator time a day adds up to 18 Litres of fuel daily, which will take (given a litre price of 1.5 USD) around about 27 USD off your budget every day. Your monthly expenses just for fuel (not to mention the initial purchase and maintenance costs for the generator) will be 756 USD; for an ENTIRE YEAR you are looking at 9.072 USD !!! Oh did I mention the noise factor which is not just annoying but also forces you to put up volume on your TV set to almost maximum while watching the latest news on greenhouse gases and pollution? Last but not least, as ZESA tends to come back-on very late (sometimes only in the middle of the night) you will have a choice to make. Either you leave your generator running just to have your (security) lights going (and easily extend your daily generator hours to 8 or even more hours and now you are looking at 12.960 USD yearly fuel costs) or you expose yourself and make yourself vulnerable by switching the generator off and stay in the dark until ZESA might come back. There are by far better, environmental friendlier and long term much cheaper solutions to your problems and you should seriously consider a solar system which is expected to last at least 25 years and can run most of your electrical appliances just as well as a generator does. Don’t expect the electricity problems to go away soon....if ever! We are dealing with a global crisis here and now is the time to invest into the future and save yourself some big money.
